KATHMANDU: The government prepares to mark the 26th Earthquake Protection Day in 2080 on Magh 2 (Jan 16).

The 26th Earthquake Safety Day Publicity Committee announced this information during a news conference in Kathmandu on Thursday.

The government plans to commemorate the day on Magh 2 (Jan 16) with the major theme, “Let’s use local resources and technology to build earthquake-resistant structures.”

Since 2055, the government has been celebrating Earthquake Safety Day every year on Magh 2 in memory of the great earthquake that occurred on Magh 2, 1990.

Director General of Urban Development and Building Construction Department Surendra Mohan Shrestha said that this year too, like previous years, the government is going to celebrate by organizing various earthquake awareness programs across the country.

He stated that Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal will be present at the 26th Earthquake Safety Day program.

He stated that because there has not been an earthquake in the western portion of Nepal in around 517 years, scientists believe there is a chance of an earthquake greater than 8 Rector because to stored energy.

He stated that Nepal has seen earthquakes of varying magnitudes over time. The collapse of unstable housing constructions caused a massive loss of wealth in Gorkha, Bajhang, and Jajarkot during the 2072 earthquake.

He said that earthquake safety can be ensured only when the National Building Code issued by the Government of Nepal is strictly followed, especially the map passes from the local levels.

He said that it is necessary to advance the regularization work to make the weak house structures safe.
