KATHMANDU: Police recovered Rs 33.4 million from the house of ascetic Ram Bahadur Bomjan, who was arrested from Budhanilkantha in Kathmandu.

According to Nepal Police’s Central Investigation Bureau, 30 million and 375 thousand Nepali rupees and foreign money worth 30,92,406 from 17 different countries were discovered at his home.

The CIB is investigating this money.

Similarly, the police also recovered 14 mobile phones, 5 iPads, 2 vehicles and 4 motorcycles from his house.

The arrest comes in response to a complaint filed by a 22-year-old woman, who had been a disciple in Bamjan’s ashram in Halkhoriya, Bara, since July-August, 2014.

The charges against Bamjan prompted the issuance of an arrest warrant by the Sarlahi District Court on February 20, 2020.

However, authorities were unable to apprehend him.

CIB also received a tip alleging Bamjan’s illegal accumulation of foreign and Nepali currencies.

After an extensive search, the self-proclaimed ‘Little Buddha,’ aged 34, was apprehended at his residence in Budhanilkantha Municipality-6 on Tuesday.

During the arrest Bamjan attempted to escape by jumping from a window on the south face of the fourth storey of his house, according to CIB Spokesperson and Superintendent of Police Nawaraj Adhikari.

The CIB has prepared to present Bomjan at District Court Sarlahi.

The police are now investigating complaints related to individuals who are reported to have disappeared under mysterious circumstances from Bamjan’s ashram.
