Popular YouTuber Uma Chamling Rai detained in Sikkim

KATHMANDU: Renowned YouTuber Uma Chamling Rai has been apprehended in Sikkim following the public release of a video associated with a cultural event in Lokse. The arrest was carried out by the police force in Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim.

Indian media have mentioned that Uma was arrested based on the complaint given by Sila Rai, a member of Sikkim’s ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha. Rai was arrested on Saturday.

According to a report by India Today, journalist Sujal Pradhan, based in Sikkim and associated with India Today, has highlighted that Uma Rai has been strategically targeted with an eye on the upcoming elections. Uma Rai has been accused of orchestrating a conspiracy related to “communal” and “terrorist violence.”

The police team, dispatched from Gangtok, apprehended Uma Rai in connection with a video that allegedly escalated communal tensions.

Sujal Pradhan’s report in India Today suggests that Uma Rai is accused of promoting and escalating communal violence among various communities in Sikkim.

According to India Today, Uma Rai has been asked to be punished according to the Indian Penal Code.

The Indian government’s official news agency PTI reports that Uma Rai is facing charges under the criminal laws of the country, and a demand for punishment has been made.
