Major General Nirmal Kumar Thapa recommended for promotion to Lieutenant General
The decision was made public in a statement released on Wednesday, following the committee's meeting.
KATHMANDU: The Nepali Army’s Promotion Recommendation Committee has decided to propose the promotion of Major General Nirmal Kumar Thapa to the rank of Lieutenant General.
The decision was made public in a statement released on Wednesday, following the committee’s meeting.
Thapa is going to be promoted to the vacant post after Lieutenant General Sitaram Khadka went on compulsory leave. Major General Thapa is currently working as a force commander in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Syria.
Lieutenant General Thapa’s promotion is subject to a seven-day window for any complaints, objections, or disputes. With a background in peacekeeping operations, he is positioned as a suitable candidate to lead the Nepali Army.
Previously, Ashok Raj Sigdel held the rank of General, and now, with Thapa’s recommended promotion, he is slated to take command from the upcoming Bhadra.
While General Sigdel had been recommended for promotion earlier, Thapa’s seniority places him as a strong contender for the role of Chief of Army Staff after the completion of the tenure of the current Chief, General Prabhu Ram Sharma, on Bhadra 24 (Sept 10).
