Breakthrough surgery at KMC: 9-year-old girl gets innovative chest pus treatment
Before this, such an operation was done only by opening the chest.
KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) has successfully performed a surgery to remove pus from the lungs without resorting to traditional chest-opening procedures.
The innovative approach, known as video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, involved creating a small hole in the chest to extract accumulated pus, marking the first instance of its application in Nepal.
Pediatrician Dr. Aashish Lal Shrestha highlighted the significance of this milestone, emphasizing that the surgery was conducted on 9-year-old Aakriti Thakur, who faced chest complications post-pneumonia.
Unlike conventional chest-opening operations, this new technique reduces recovery time and minimizes patient discomfort.
Dr. Shrestha noted that the patient’s recovery process will be quicker, and the overall cost of the surgery service will not significantly differ from traditional methods.
Aakriti Thakur’s father, Umesh Chandra Thakur, expressed relief over his daughter’s improving health, mentioning her regained ability to eat and walk, with noticeable improvements in lung functionality.
