KATHMANDU: Rock climbing, one of the adventure sports, can now be done at Maha Bhir (honey cliff) in Solukhumbu’s Mea Dudhkoshi. Only last week, rock climbing was inaugurated at Maha Cliff in Ward No. 5 Roka of Mapya Dudhkoshi Rural Municipality.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Kami Rita Sherpa, a world-record climber renowned for successfully summiting the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, 28 times.

This initiative is a collaborative effort between Mapya Dudhkoshi, Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal, and the Mountain Guide Association of Nepal, which provided technical support for the establishment of the rock climbing center.

The hill, standing at an impressive 120 meters, serves as an ideal spot for rock climbing enthusiasts. In conjunction with Mapya Dudhkoshi and the Mountain Guide Association of Nepal, basic training in rock climbing has been imparted to 12 local youths from different wards at the newly established center.

Sanjiv Gurung, the president of the Mountain Guide Association Nepal, mentioned that while the complete training program spans two months, the current focus has been on providing fundamental training.

Neelhari Bastola, Chair of the Trekking Agency Association Nepal, expressed optimism about the future of Mah Bhir. He emphasized that the rock climbing center in Maha Bhir has the potential to significantly contribute to tourism in Solukhumbu.

Buddhi Kiran Rai, the Chair of Mapya Dudhkoshi Rural Municipality, expressed his delight at the opportunity to conduct such training in his rural village, highlighting its importance in enhancing safety measures and rescues for climbers.

He said that by opening a rock climbing center in Mapya, not only local but also foreign rock climbers can be brought to play. “We have established a rock climbing center at Maha Bhir while taking Mapya Dudh Koshi as a sports hub,” he said, “along with this, we are studying to do volleyball ground, zipline, and other sports activities.”

Locals of Mapya Dudhkoshi rural municipality are very happy as there will be commercial promotion as there is a honey beehive near the road section connecting to Everest region.
