KATHMANDU: In a span of 9 days, the number of COVID-19 cases in India has doubled, reaching 1,970 on Tuesday, as reported by the Times of India.

Just 9 days ago, the count stood at 938. The sudden surge, after a seven-month lull, is attributed to the emergence of new COVID-19 variants.

A novel variant, named ‘Pirola,’ was recently discovered in Kerala and has since been detected in Maharashtra and Goa.

Some researchers suggest that the rise in infections is linked to colder temperatures.

This trend is not limited to India, as both America and Europe also experience an uptick in coronavirus cases during the colder season.

Additionally, concerns are raised about the potential decrease in vaccine effectiveness and a decrease in public vigilance contributing to the rise in COVID-19 infections.
