KATHMANDU: After opposing the Parliament session in India, an additional 49 opposition MPs have been suspended, marking the largest number of lawmakers ever put under suspension in the history of Parliament.
As of today, the total number of suspended MPs has reached 141, according to reports from the Indian media.
The suspension prevents the MPs from participating in all parliamentary proceedings, effectively halting their engagement in legislative activities.
The suspension comes in the wake of the ongoing winter session, and the move is aimed at restricting the involvement of the suspended members in parliamentary affairs.
Prominent opposition figures, including Supriya Sule, Manish Tewari, Shashi Tharoor, Mohammad Faisal, Karti Chidambaram, Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Dimple Yadav, and Danish Ali, have been among those suspended. The suspension was imposed to curb their participation in the remainder of the winter session of Parliament.
Previously, 78 MPs, including 33 from the Lok Sabha and 45 from the Rajya Sabha, were suspended on Monday. The decision to suspend these lawmakers was made by the Lok Sabha’s central minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
The suspended MPs, including those mentioned earlier, have been barred from participating in the entire winter session of Parliament.
The suspension has generated widespread criticism and debate, raising concerns about the impact on democratic processes and opposition voices within the parliamentary system.
