KATHMANDU: The Patan High Court is anticipated to issue a verdict today in the ongoing case related to fake Bhutanese refugees, bringing potential clarity and legal resolution to the matter.

As the hearing on the review petition against the Kathmandu District Court’s detention order has concluded, the order might be issued today.

On Thursday, the arguments of all parties were over in the hearing held in the bench of Judges Janak Pandey and Prakash Kharel since last week in Patan High Court.

On Tuesday, the arguments of the lawyers for the defendant were over, and on Wednesday and Thursday, before lunch time, the arguments of the government lawyers were held.

City Magistrate of Patan High Court Tirtharaj Bhattarai informed that the hearing was over after the defendant’s lawyer made a counterargument after lunch on Thursday.

The case is kept under ‘watchlist’ in the bench of the two judges. According to Bhattarai, the order would most likely be issued on Friday.

A case was filed against 22 people, including former Deputy Prime Minister and UML leader Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, former Home Minister and Congress leader Bal Krishna Khand, and then Home Secretary Teknarayan Pandey, for their roles in posing as Bhutanese refugees and transporting them to America.

In this case, the Kathmandu District Court ruled that all of the accused, with the exception of two, be taken to prison for pre-trial custody on Ashadh 1 (June 16).

The inmates have filed an appeal with the High Court against the detention decision.
