COLOMBO: At least 30 people were injured after a bus veered off the road and toppled in Welikanda in North Central Province of Sri Lanka on Thursday, police said.

A spokesperson for Welikanda police told the media that the driver lost control of the vehicle which was transporting at least 75 employees of a privately-owned rice mill.

The injured have been admitted to a local hospital, police said.

Four people who sustained serious injuries have been transferred to Polonnaruwa District General Hospital, which is the biggest hospital in the province, police said.

Some 19,740 road accidents were reported in Sri Lanka in 2022, killing 2,485 people, according to the police.
