NTA seeks replies from internet service providers in regard with TikTok ban

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Telecommunication Authority has instructed internet service providers to respond within 24 hours regarding whether or not TikTok has been shut down.
Issuing a public notice, the Nepal Telecommunication Authority directed entities to report the decision of the TikTok shutdown within 24 hours.
The notice includes a warning that service providers failing to comply within this timeframe may face consequences, including license cancellation, in accordance with the Telecommunications Act of 2053.
Previously, all internet and mobile service providers were instructed to implement the government’s decision to close TikTok and notify them, but as the information has yet to be received, they have been instructed to provide information within 24 hours, according to Surya Prasad Lamichhane, the authority’s deputy director and information officer.
He said that as notices have been issued to close public ticket counters on Kartik 28 (Nov 24) and Mangsir 2 (Nov 18), the authority has instructed them to submit a response within the next 24 hours.
The Council of Ministers meeting on Kartik 27 (Nov 23) had decided to stop the use of TikTok saying that social harmony had started to deteriorate.
Immediately following the decision, the authorities directed the service provider to shut down TikTok.
The authority has also issued a warning, stating that no service-providing company has implemented the directives so far, and as a result, the regulatory body will take action.
