KATHMANDU: China’s Hunan has stepped up efforts to protect migratory birds.

China’s Hunan province has prioritized the protection of migratory bird species at Swan Lake, a natural water region south of Dongting Lake, China’s second biggest freshwater lake. It was originally a vital wintering area for migratory birds.

Migratory birds in the lake were becoming extinct owing to habitat destruction, over-hunting, human meddling, and other issues.

In 2022, the local government began recovering the ecosystem by planting plants and vegetation along the lake’s boundary.

A patrol squad was also organized to deter bird poaching.

The effort has been successful as migratory birds such as white cranes, tundra swans and white spoonbills have returned to the lake this winter.

Many rare birds have been spotted this year as restoration work is now underway.
