KATHMANDU: Apoorwa Kshitiz Singh, a comedian, was found guilty and fined 10,000 rupees by the Kathmandu District Court.
Judge Kapilmani Gautam’s bench on Sunday fined him Rs 10,000 for a violation under Section 165 of the Civil Code that should not have harmed his social standing.
He was also charged with offenses against public order, caste prejudice, and other forms of caste discrimination. However, because the claim was insufficient, the bench did not impose extra penalty in that case.
He expressed his disgust, stating that convicting him on the basis of producing a parody was improper and that anybody might be sued.
He stated that he expected support from the artists and that it would take some time to obtain the whole text, so he was unsure whether to file an appeal or not.
He performed ‘Newar’s tradition’ stand-up comedy at Comedy Cafe.
The said video was uploaded on YouTube on 10 Bhadra 2079 (26 August 2022).
However, within 24 hours, there was backlash and dissent.
He withdrew the video and officially apologized after protests and condemnation.
