KATHMANDU: Singer and UML leader Komal Oli’s family has established an Akshaya Kosh of Rs 20 lakh in the name of late mother Deepa Oli.
Komal Oli said that this Akshay Kosh was established in memory of her mother so that the girls of Daab could study easily.
Komal Oli said that Akshaya Kosh will provide scholarships to Tharu community and Dalit community girls in Daab district.
This trust will bear all the expenses so that one person from the Tharu community and one from the Dalit community can study from class 8 to higher education,’ said Oli.
“My mother could not read,” she went on to say, “even though she could not go to school, she had a good political and social consciousness, she always encouraged us to read and provided the motivation to keep reading.” Oli stated that her mother thought that every girl should attend school, and she hoped that the fund established in her honor would assist daughters who are unable to attend school due to financial constraints.
Similarly, the Oli family has stated that every year on Mother’s Day, they would celebrate a female leader. Komal Oli added that women beyond 60 years of age who have not attained a position of any advantage by joining politics would be awarded with ‘Deepa Oli Smriti Samman’.
Oli recalled her mother’s involvement in the Mahila Sangh during the Panchayat era, rising to the position of municipal vice-chair.
‘Mother used to emphasize that women should join in politics as it helps to better both the family and society and disseminate knowledge,’ she added. We intend to award this accolade every year based on his belief.
Dipa-Lalit Trust, created in Deepa Oli’s and her husband Lalit Wali’s names, will develop and administer the scholarship and honors program, which will be distributed in the first year, Wali has also stated.
Deepa Oli, who was also the composer of more than 2 dozen songs including Komal Oli’s famous song ‘Malmal Kiri Junkiri’, passed away on Mangsir 2 (Nov 18) in Kathmandu.
