KATHMANDU: The government is currently underway with the National Vitamin ‘A’ program, scheduled for both today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday), aiming to provide essential vitamin ‘A’ and deworming medication to children.
The Family Welfare Division, operating under the Department of Health Services, has announced that this year’s National Vitamin ‘A’ program will be distributing vitamin ‘A’ supplements and anti-worm medicine over the course of the next two days.
Traditionally, the government conducts this program twice each year, with the first phase taking place on Oct 19 and 20 and the second phase on April 19 and 20.
However, due to the occurrence of the Dashain festival on October 19 and 20 this year, the first phase of the program was rescheduled for Nov 3 and 4.
As per the Department’s guidelines, children between the ages of 6 to 59 months will receive vitamin ‘A’ capsules, while children aged 1 to 5 years will be administered deworming medication.
The government’s objective is to distribute deworming medication to over 2.9 million children within the age group of 1 to 5 years and provide vitamin ‘A’ capsules to nearly 3.2 million children across the nation.
The Department has issued a call to parents to visit their nearest distribution centers and ensure that their children receive the necessary vitamin ‘A’ supplements and deworming medication.
The government initiated the distribution of vitamin ‘A’ capsules back in 1993 and introduced leprosy medication alongside vitamin ‘A’ in 2001.
