The proportion of Australian citizens born in another country has increased since the recession due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to figures published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Australia’s foreign-born population increased by 155,000 people between 2021 and 2022. As of June 30, 2022, 7.7 million Australian residents were born overseas.
Between 2020 and 2021, the proportion of Australia’s foreign-born population declined from 29.9 percent to 29.3 percent, marking the first decrease in over two decades. This number has decreased for the first time since 1999.
During the decade from 2012 to 2022, individuals born in India constituted the fastest-growing immigrant group in Australia, with people born in China and Nepal following closely.
By 2022, those of Chinese descent comprised 2.3 percent of Australia’s population, up from 1.8 percent in 2012. In the same period, the percentage of Australian citizens born in England decreased from 4.4 percent to 3.7 percent.
