KATHMANDU: The Indian government has introduced a minimum export price of $800 per ton for onions in an effort to curb rising prices in the domestic market.

This measure is aimed at ensuring a steady supply of onions within the country.

As per the Federal Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, the regulation will be in effect from Sunday through Jan 16 (Poush 31).

Additionally, the government has declared its intent to procure an additional 2 million tons of onions for the buffer, supplementing the 5 million tons already acquired.

Reports indicate that onion prices in India have surged by over 50% within the past two weeks.
