Guterres reaching Solukhumbu to assess climate change impact, heads to Pokhara next

KATHMANDU: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, currently on a four-day official trip to Nepal, is set to visit Pokhara today as part of his itinerary.

Secretary-General Guterres, who initially arrived in Kathmandu for his official visit, is scheduled to visit Syangboche in Solukhumbu today.

The purpose of this visit, as stated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is to conduct an observational assessment of the impact of climate change in the area.

After his return to Kathmandu from Solukhumbu, Guterres is scheduled to participate in a program at the UN House in Lalitpur before heading to Pokhara in the evening.

Tomorrow morning, Guterres will depart from Pokhara to visit the Annapurna circuit. Upon his return from the circuit, he is slated to hold a press conference at the old airport in Pokhara. Subsequently, he will travel to Lumbini from Pokhara.

Upon his return to Kathmandu from Lumbini, he is scheduled to address both houses of the Federal Parliament.

Secretary-General Guterres is expected to conclude his visit and return to the United Nations headquarters on Wednesday.

The Nepali Army has been entrusted with the security of him who arrived in Kathmandu on Saturday night. According to security sources, 6 vehicles will provide protection from the right, left and front-rear, along with the ‘jammer’ vehicle equipped with special technology at the back of the ‘bullet-proof’ vehicle in which he is riding.

In view of his security threat, special commando of the Nepali Army has been deployed. Nepal Police, Armed Police and Special Police have been mobilized for external security, information collection and coordination.
