KATHMANDU: In the heart of Tansen, Palpa, a unique tradition continues to echo during Dashain in the sacred precincts of Bhagwati Temple, Tansen Municipality-3.

Known as the endangered “Dafa Bhajan,” this rare hymn has been reverberating through Navratri since the onset of Dashain, as shared by Mangalman Bajracharya, a senior citizen of Tansen Taksar.

This Senkalin hymn is a captivating relic of the region’s cultural heritage, sung just once a year within the Bhagwati temple complex.

Sadly, due to the absence of proper preservation and awareness, this rich tradition remains at risk of fading away.

In the entirety of Tansen, only two individuals possess the knowledge of singing the Dafa hymn and arranging its intricate melodies and rhythms.

Gyanukumar Bajracharya and Mangalman Bajracharya lead the charge, each overseeing a group of dedicated participants.

With harmonium and tabla in hand, they recite the verses from the ancient bhajans placed before them, while others contribute to the chorus.

The accompaniment includes mujura and cymbals, creating a harmonious rhythm.

The traditional rendition of Dafa hymn initially featured mridanga and cymbals, but it has evolved with time.

Yet, in recent times, the younger generation shows limited interest in the age-old practice of hymns, raising concerns about the preservation of this rich heritage.

Cultural expert Madan Deurali voices the worry that, with the passing of the elderly bhajan singers, this invaluable tradition could be on the brink of vanishing.

Efforts to document, safeguard, and revitalize such cultural treasures become vital in preserving the cultural tapestry of Nepal.
