KATHMANDU: The United Nations Security Council has failed to adopt a resolution based on a Russian proposal calling for a humanitarian truce in Gaza.
The draft proposal received five votes in favor, four votes against, and six persons were absent.
China, the United Arab Emirates, Mozambique, and Gabon, in addition to Russia, voted in favor of the motion. America, the United Kingdom, France, and Japan voted against it. Six additional countries were not represented.
To be passed, the Security Council resolution must receive at least 9 votes in favor.
Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, said his delegation was disappointed with the results of the vote.
The Security Council has submitted another draft proposal from Brazil on the same issue. But the time for voting has not been fixed.
