KATHMANDU: According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, 3.8 trillion US dollars have been lost in crops and livestock due to disasters in the last 30 years.

A new report released on Saturday confirmed this.

A new FAO flagship report titled Impact of Disasters on Agriculture and Food Security presented the first global statistics on the impact of disasters on agricultural production, focusing on crops and livestock.

It is said that this number could increase further if systematic data on losses in fisheries, water resources and forest sub-sectors are available.

The report calls for improved disaster data and information on all sub-sectors of agriculture, crops, livestock, fisheries and aquaculture.

It has been suggested to increase investment in the development and streamlining of multi-regional and multi-risk disaster risk reduction approaches in policies and programs at all levels.
