TOKYO: Four people were injured after an elderly woman crashed her car into a clinic in Japan’s Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo.
At around 10:35 a.m. local time, a passenger car driven by the 75-year-old female driver slammed into the waiting room of a clinic located in the prefecture’s Kamagaya City.
According to the police, it appeared that the vehicle failed to round the curve of a private road in front of the clinic, and smashed into a sofa in the waiting room.
The victims, including a one-year-old boy and three women in their 30s to 70s, were taken to hospital, said the police, adding that all injuries are said to be minor.
“My legs hurt so much that I couldn’t press the brakes,” said the driver, who was on her way to the clinic for a hospital visit.
The elderly female driver was not injured and the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.
As Japan grapples with the challenges of its rapidly aging population, the safety of elderly drivers also raises concerns. Official data showed that in 2022, the number of deadly traffic accidents caused by drivers aged 75 or over in the country rose to 379.
