KATHMANDU: Autumn’s wind has begun to blow. The sky is blue and clear. In this wonderful season, colorful kites have begun to soar.

Kite flying is one of the many enjoyable and appealing parts of the Dashain festival. Dashain is hence more significant to youngsters. When Dashain arrives, the children are overjoyed.

Children in new attire hang on the swing and fly colorful kites of various sizes. Kites are flown in cities and villages outside the Kathmandu Valley during Dashain, but this practice is most widespread in the Kathmandu Valley.

It is unknown when the practice of flying kites on Dashain began, but according to elders, the practice is quite old. When the cause for the practice of flying kites on Dashain is investigated, it is discovered to be related to religious beliefs. It is thought that the tradition of flying kites began to communicate to Indra, the deity of years and seasons, that there is adequate water for the crops.

The weather is another important reason for flying kites during Dashain. Dashain, which occurs in autumn, has an open and clear sky. Kite flying requires a slow wind flow. It does not rain or become angry during Dashain, thus kites can be flown. The wind flow is not as strong as it was at Chait Baisakh, and the kite is balanced.

Similarly, since schools/colleges are closed for many days during Dashain, there is no pressure for children to study and write. There is no limit to their happiness when they fly colorful kites in their free time. With the advent of Dashain, local youth and children flying kites at Ratamata in Halchowk.
