According to Vedic Sanatan Hindu tradition, sixteen Sraddhas are performed before festivals, yagnas and great works.
It is classically believed that in sixteen Sraddhas, fathers are hoping for Tarpan and Pinda from their children. It is religiously believed that performing sixteen Sraddhas fulfills one’s obligations towards one’s father and also frees one from one’s father’s debt.
However, this is a peculiar year, Adhik Mas which means the coming month of Asoj will be a full gap further lengethening Dashain into the next month of Kartik as this is a purushottam month.
There is a law that the sixteen Sraddha should be performed on the dates of their fathers. Experts say that if you are stuck for any reason according to Apat Dharma, you should do it from Ashwin Krishna Aunsi to Ashwin Shukla Panchami. From today, there is a crowd of devotees in Pashupatinath area of the capital.
These 16 holy days are called by different names like Sohra Shraddha, Pitripaksha, Kagant, Jitiya, Mahalaya Paksha, Pitru Pokho etc.
