KATHMANDU: Neymar Jr., a Brazilian striker, has broken Pele’s record as the greatest football player of all time. In the World Cup qualifying match, Neymar set a new record by defeating Bolivia 5-1.

He is now the sole player in Brazil’s history to have scored the most goals.

Neymar, 31, missed a penalty in the first half of yesterday’s contest. But, by scoring two goals in the 61st and 93rd minutes, he not only escaped disappointment, but he also made history. His total number of international goals now stands at 79.

‘I never expected that I would reach this record,’ said Neymar, who has played 125 matches for Brazil.

He further said, ‘I don’t want to say that I am better than Pele. I always wanted to draw my own story. He wanted to write his name in the history of Brazilian football and the national team. And, today I showed it by doing it.’

Pele is considered the greatest football player of all time. He scored 77 goals for Brazil and is the only player to win three World Cups. He died in December at the age of 82.
