KATHMANDU: Janardhan Sharma, Deputy General Secretary of the CPN (Maoist Centre) and Member of Parliament, has demanded that the government provide quick relief and compensation, citing extensive property destruction in Rukum (West), Jajarkot, and Salyan.

While speaking at an emergency meeting of the House of Representatives on Monday, Deputy Secretary General Sharma expressed his profound condolences for the deaths of two children in Rukum and one person in Jajarkot as a result of the heavy rain accompanied by a storm on the Bhadra 17 (Sept 3).

He stated that the government should not waste time in providing enough compensation because the corn crop, which is the main crop there, was also damaged. Deputy Secretary General Sharma also expressed disappointment that the federal government has neglected to take action to assist victims.

He said, ‘On the Bhadra 17 (Sept 3), Rukum (East) Chaurahjari Municipality center has been hit by heavy rains and storms. Ratna Bahadur Budhathoki’s 8-year-old son Manoj and 4-year-old daughter Bhavna Budhathoki were swept away by the Kharekhola river and died. Similarly, one person died due to lightning in Jajarkot. And, due to the incessant rains in Jajarkot along with parts of Salyan and Jajarkot, the main crop is maize crop, including Chaurahjari Ward No. 1, 2 and 3, 6, 128. The corn crop has been completely destroyed. And, great damage has been done. The tin roof of the house was blown off and damaged. The local government is taking initiatives for the necessary relief and compensation for the damage. The state government will also take initiative from its place. And, especially for the compensation and relief of the federal government, I want to draw attention.’

Deputy Secretary General Sharma expressed his belief that the state government will also make necessary arrangements for immediate relief and compensation to the victims of the incident.
