People in the capital have been dressing up as cows and roaming the market as cows since the morning.

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Valley is buzzing on the second day of Gai Jatra. This year, Janai Purnima and Gai Jatra began on the same day, Thursday, therefore Gai Jatra is still being celebrated in certain regions today.
People in the capital have been dressing up as cows and roaming the market as cows since the morning. The Gai Jatra celebration is widely celebrated, especially in areas populated by the Newar population. Every year, from Bhadrakrishna Pratipada to Ashtami, the Gai Jatra festival is celebrated for eight days with numerous performances.
Since ancient times, a cow parade in honour of deceased folks has been held throughout the year, particularly in the Newar community. According to legend, Pratap Malla established the Gai Jatra ritual to demonstrate to the queen, who was heartbroken by her son’s loss, that people die in other people’s homes as well.
Even in today’s Gai Jatra, milk, fruits, bread, curd, curd, as well as grain and fluids, are offered to those who are carried out for the Jatra in the guise of cows or cows. It is a religious belief that by travelling through the city holding the cow’s tail, those who have died throughout the year will pass Vaitarani. Cow parade through the Basantpur Palace region is being practised today based on this religious belief.
As the Queen’s mind could not be calmed even by the Gai Jatra, King Pratap Malla ordered various types of farces and satirical programs to be held, so there is a popular rumor that comedies have been in vogue. Gai Jatra, which started from the Malla period, has now been established as the original festival of Kathmandu Valley.
