KATHMANDU: The largest abdominal surgery has been performed at the Nobel Teaching Hospital in Biratnagar.

A 53-year-old Manrani Kurungwang of Letang Municipality-2 Khaireni in Morang has successfully undergone the largest and most complicated surgery on her stomach.

Kurungwang had cancer where the bile duct joins the small intestine. During this procedure, the small intestine, the lower part of the stomach, some of the pancreas, the gall bladder, and the glands around the bile duct were cut and removed.

Dr. Vinit Kumar Yadav, a hepatobiliary surgeon at Nobel Hospital, said that the pancreatic duct, bile duct, and stomach were successfully attached to the small intestine after the malignant portion was removed.

According to Dr. Yadav, this operation is regarded the largest stomach operation in the medical field because it is intricate and tough. “This is the largest operation among all stomach operations; in the medical field, it is known as the largest stomach operation,” says Dr. Yadav. “As the sensitive organs are in the same place, there is a risk of the patient dying if there is a slight error during this operation or if other organs are affected, but we have successfully performed the operation.”

A team including Dr. Sachidananda Shah, Dr. Vinit Kumar Yadav, a Nobel surgeon, performed this operation after nearly six hours. Generally, most operations are completed in 2-3 hours.

However, Dr. Sachidananda Shah, a surgeon, claims that the operation took a lengthy time because several organs had to be severed and reattached. Dr. Bandana Poudel, an anesthesiologist, aided in the operation. According to the experts, if the operation was not completed on time, the cancer would spread and the patient would die within six months.

But, according to the physicians, Kurungwang’s cancer has been eradicated, thus this risk is no longer present.

Nobel Hospital has successfully done complex and unusual surgeries due to expert doctors and cutting-edge technology.
