KATHMANDU: Janai Purnima is a Hindu festival celebrated all over the country, with family get-togethers and feasts of Kwati or sprout lentils.
Every year on Shrawan Shukla Purnima, Upakarma, Rishitarpani, and Raksha Bandhan are celebrated.
As Janai Purnima approaches, the market for Rakhi Janai (sacred thread) and yarn has increased.
Today, the tradition of wearing rakhi is thriving.
Rakhi buying entails more than Janai in the market. Brahmins and Kshatriya men have traditionally worn Yagyopaveet (Janai) according to Hindu tradition.
After completing the Vratabandha (Upanayana) ritual after childhood, after the Guru-Purohit recites the Gayatri Mantra in the ear so that no one else can hear it, and with a firm resolve to follow a sincere religion and the path of truth, a Janai prepared by the Guru-Purohit is accepted.
