Patient dies after kidney removal during stone operation
Although 14 mm and 9.5 mm stones were removed following kidney surgery, the patient's relatives claim that the patient died as a result of a surgical error.
KATHMANDU: A patient who came to Swastik Cardio and Multispeciality Hospital near Sahidgate in Dhangadhi, Kailali, for stone surgery died. Aijanlal Chaudhary, 55, of Belauri Municipality Ward No. 10 Shivanagar, Kanchanpur, died after undergoing surgery for kidney stones in both kidneys.
Although 14 mm and 9.5 mm stones were removed following kidney surgery, the patient’s relatives claim that the patient died as a result of a surgical error.
The patient was admitted to the hospital at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, according to Bishnu Prasad Chaudhary, a relative of the deceased Chaudhary.
As there were stones in both kidneys, the doctor recommended surgery at the hospital. On the same day, at 1:30 p.m., the hospital transported the patient to the operating room. At 2:30 p.m., Chaudhary’s surgery was completed.
The operation, according to the doctor who performed it, was a success. According to Bishnu Prasad, the patient began experiencing stomach pain after one hour of surgery. According to relatives, the patient fainted while notifying a nurse working at the hospital about her health difficulties.
Susma Dahit, the daughter of the deceased Chaudhary, said that her father underwent a second operation around 7:00 p.m. and one of his kidneys was removed. “When the doctor removed the stone, internal bleeding occurred because the vein was cut. Therefore, after being told that the kidney has to be removed to save the patient, we gave permission for it to happen,’ she said. The father died due to the negligence of the hospital.’
Relatives said that the team of Dr. Jonas Tiwari, a surgeon working at the hospital, operated on Chaudhary. Dr. Jonas Tiwari of the hospital produced considerable bleeding while removing the left kidney stone, and the patient died during another operation to remove the kidney. According to relatives, the doctor stated that after the second procedure, the patient’s condition got more critical.
According to Susma Dahit, the deceased’s daughter, the doctor stated that before the first operation, the patient’s body had 6 points of blood, but after the procedure, it reduced, and when he was taken for the second operation, the doctor stated that there were only 2 points of blood. Throughout Saturday night, 23 units of blood were donated by the Red Cross Blood Transfusion Center.
Punaram Chaudhary, a relative of the deceased, said that the doctor tried to cover up the mistake by lying that the operation was successful. He said, ‘Hospitals and doctors should be punished for mistakes. There is no forgiveness for playing with people’s lives.’ When trying to talk to the hospital about the death of Aijanlal, Chair Mahesh Joshi refused to give formal information saying that he would call after a while.
