Today, the last Monday of Shrawan, ends the fast at Shiva temple

KATHMANDU: As per Sauramas, the last Monday of the lunar month, devotees are seen flocking to Pashupatinath including Pashupatinath temples all over the country from early this morning. Monday in the month of Shrawan is considered to be the favourite day of Lord Shiva.

Vedic Sanatan Hindus are celebrating this day by fasting and ritually worshipping Lord Shiva. On the occasion of Shaune Monday, thousands of devotees are worshipping at various temples including Pashupati.

Every Monday in the month of Shrawan, the women who have been fasting and worshipping Shiva are ending their fast.

Today, it is customary for women to worship Lord Shiva by wearing green clothes, bangles and mehndi and fasting. There is a religious belief that doing this will fulfil one’s desire.

This time there were five Mondays in the month of Shrawan. It is mentioned in the scriptures that five Mondays in the month of Shrawan are considered very auspicious and holy.

According to the Shiva Purana, Shiva came to earth in this month, i.e. to his father-in-law’s house. Therefore, based on this belief, it is said that Shiva comes to earth every year in the month of Shrawan. Therefore, Shiva is specially worshipped in this month.

Today Pashupatinath will be crowded with devotees, so all four gates have been opened since 3 am. There is a religious practice of those who fast on the Monday of Shrawan to perform Godan, Purnapatra or Puja on the last Monday.

As the month of Shrawan and Monday are considered to be the month and bar of Lord Shiva, there is a religious belief that if pure water is offered on this day, Lord Ashutosh will be pleased and fulfill his wishes.

On this occasion, devotees have thronged Shiva temples including Makhan Mahadevasthan known as Small Pashupatinath located in Gokarneshwor, Nageshwor, Doleshwpr, and Basantapur since early morning.
