Inmates death case: 15 arrested including police involved in the incident

According to the District Police Office, the investigation is being carried out on the 15 people who were detained.

KATHMANDU: 15 persons, including 10 police officers, have been detained at the Sankhuwasabha District Jail Khandbari for questioning in connection with the event.

Binod Tolangi, 19, of Madi Municipality-5, Sankhuwasabha, and Aakash Balami, 28, of Kakani Rural Municipality-7, Nuwakot, died on Wednesday morning as a result of prison beatings.

Birendra Godar, Deputy Superintendent of Police in Sankhuwasabha, confirmed that detainees Madi-5’s Tolangi and Kakani-7’s 28 Balami perished as a result of a beating.

Tolangi and Balami, two prisoners, were apprehended by police at 1 a.m. on Wednesday for attempting to escape by cutting the window rods of the prison restroom.

According to reports, even the police officers assigned to the prison’s security were personally participating in the beating. According to the CCTV footage in the prison, the prisoner was beaten by the police.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Godar said that after watching the footage, 15 people, including 10 policemen who were assigned to the security of the prison, were detained and an investigation into the incident was started. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Godar, if the victim files a complaint, the period will be extended and further investigation would be undertaken on individuals involved in the crime.

It has been seen that five inmates including the policeman and watchman, main were involved in the beating. According to the District Police Office, the investigation is being carried out on the 15 people who were detained.

20 policemen under the leadership of the Assistant Inspector of Police were mobilized for the security of the prison. After the involvement of the police in the incident, police assistant inspector Laxmi Chaudhary was arrested and an investigation was started, according to the district police office.

The police have kept nine prisoners, including jail watchman Ram Kumar Karki, in the custody of the district police office to investigate the death of the prisoner. The incident took place in the ‘A block’ of the prison. There were 66 prisoners in A Block.

Following the incident, the District Security Committee, led by Assistant Chief District Officer Mohanmani Ghimire, created a three-member investigating committee on Wednesday.

The committee includes Police Inspector Saroj Khanal of the District Police Office and Deputy Subba Tarani Ghimire of the Administration Office.

Similarly, the Koshi State Police Office has also formed a four-member investigation committee under the leadership of Superintendent of Police Rishi Ram Kandel.

Police Inspector Jitesh Dahal, Police Deputy Inspector Rudra Bahadur Khadka and Constable Tirtha Bhattarai are members of the committee.

The investigation committee of the Koshi State Police has started its work from Thursday.

Inquiry committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs begin an investigation

After the suspicious death of two prisoners in the district jail, the Ministry of Home Affairs has formed an inquiry committee. The Ministry of Home Affairs has formed a five-member inquiry under the coordination of Kamal Prasad Pandey, Director and Spokesperson of the Prison Management Department.

The committee consists of Deputy Superintendent of Police Kaushal Kumar Budhathoki of Nepal Police, Deputy Superintendent of National Investigation Kumar Budhathoki, Legal Officer of Prisons Department Tul Bahadur Khadka and Administrative Officer of District Administration Office Sankhuwasabha.

The investigation team of the Ministry of Home Affairs arrived in Sankhuwasabha today. The team has started the investigation from today.

Currently, there are 136 prisoners, including eight women, in the Sankhuwasabha prison.
