KATHMANDU: The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is being observed today by organizing several programmes.
On the occasion of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, various programs are being celebrated across the country.
To commemorate the occasion, indigenous people gathered in Bhrikuti Mandap, and a march was organized from Bhrikuti Mandap to Maitighar Mandala in the capital. The march was attended by hundreds of people representing various indigenous cultures.
Various programs are also being celebrated in Kathmandu.
Every 9 August honors the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, named in recognition of the inaugural meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in 1982, in order to increase awareness of the problems of the indigenous population.
The United Nations General Assembly determined in its resolution 49/214 on December 23, 1994, that the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples would be marked on August 9, every year.
The UN designated the 1994-2004 period as an indigenous decade, with the slogan “the decade for action and dignity.”
Likewise, the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) also hosted a program at the Nepal Academy this afternoon.
