US knocked out of competition in sudden death to Sweden

KATHMANDU: America has been eliminated from the Women’s World Cup before the quarterfinals for the first time in the tournament’s history.

Sweden defeated America in sudden death in the last 16 matches on Sunday.

The match went to a tiebreaker after the scheduled 90 minutes and additional 30 minutes finished in a goalless draw. Sweden prevailed 5-4. Sweden will now face Japan in the quarterfinals.

Lina Hurtiz’s sixth shot for Sweden was spectacularly turned into a goal, ensuring Sweden’s triumph.

Alessa Naherer, an American goalie, initially saved the shot. The ball quickly crossed the goal line by a narrow margin.
