KATHMANDU: A hotel in Thamel has been raided in connection with the smuggling of around one quintal of gold.

A team of the Revenue Investigation Department raided Hotel Vienna on Saturday night.

According to the source, the raid was carried out to conduct an inquiry into the gold smuggling issue. Dawa Tshiring was apprehended outside the hotel. He is a Belgian citizen of Nepali origin. The hotel belongs to his wife.

The department has also seized CCTV footage and computers from the hotel and proceeded with the investigation.

During the examination, it was discovered that gold was brought from Hong Kong last Shrawan 3 (July 19) by concealing it in the brakes of motorbikes and scooters. The gold is held in the Taksar Division of the Nepal Rastra Bank’s Currency Management Department.
