3 teens die of drowning in Japan’s Fukuoka

TOKYO: Three teenage girls were confirmed dead on Friday after being pulled unconscious from a river in Japan’s western prefecture of Fukuoka, according to local police.

At around 12:50 p.m. local time, the police received a call reporting the possible drowning of three sixth-grade elementary school students who were swimming in the Inunakigawa River in the Fukumaru district of Miyawaka city.

All three victims were rescued unconscious by police officers and firefighters, and transported to hospitals.

Their deaths were later confirmed in the afternoon.

According to the police, there were no adults around at the time and the drowned were found at the bottom of the river at a depth of 2.5 to three meters.

The accident took place on the first day of the student’s summer break.
