KATHMANDU: The SAFF Championship was won by India.

India won the championship on Tuesday after defeating Kuwait 5-4 in a penalty shootout in Bangalore.

Following a 1-1 tie, the match was determined in a penalty shootout.

Kuwait took an early lead thanks to a goal by Shabaib Al-Khaldi in the 14th minute. Lallianzuala Chhangte scored in the 38th minute to tie the game.

India was the winner when goalie Gurpreet Singh Sandhu saved Kuwait captain Khalid Hajiya’s penalty shootout attempt.

Both teams played a 1-1 draw in the group stage match.

For the ninth time, India has won the SAFF Championship.

Previously, India had won the SAFF football championship in 1993, 1997, 1999, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2015, and 2021.

India has won the competition nine times in 14 years.

India has earned 50,000 US dollars with the championship. Kuwait was the runner-up, receiving 25,000 US dollars.
