Top leaders agreed to elect chairpersons of parliamentary committees immediately
Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire said the top leaders agreed in the meeting held at his office, Singha Durbar today to elect chairpersons of the parliamentary committees as soon as possible.
KATHMANDU: Top leaders of three major political parties have expressed commitment to elect chairpersons of the parliamentary committees immediately.
Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire said the top leaders agreed in the meeting held at his office, Singha Durbar today to elect chairpersons of the parliamentary committees as soon as possible.
He shared, “The top leaders expressed commitment to elect the chairperson of the parliamentary committees soon. The attention of top leaders is now focused towards electing chairpersons of the committees as the budget has already been passed. The committees will get their leadership soon.”
Total 10 thematic committees under the House of Representatives were formed on April 28, but they have not been able to pick chairpersons till date.
Speaker Ghimire held a consultation with top leaders as they did not take any initiative to elect chairpersons of the committees even after fixing the deadline.
Ghimire further said chairpersons of the committees would be elected through an election process if the parties failed to elect them through consensus.
He mentioned that he also sought advice from leaders on how to make the parliamentary committees effective and dynamic.
Speaker Ghimire added, “I told the top leaders that I have to take step if you do not initiate a process to elect chairpersons.”
The Speaker held a meeting with top leaders today to make the parliamentary committees’ role effective. Prime Minister and CPN (Maoist Chairperson), Pushpa Kamal Dahal, CPN (UML) Chairperson KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress President, Sher Bahadur Deuba, and Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Dhan Raj Gurung, were present in the meeting.
