SAFF: Nepal eliminated from the group stage, losing 2-0 to India

KATHMANDU: Nepal has been eliminated from the SAFF Championship group stage.

Nepal will be eliminated from the group stage before the last match after losing 2-0 against India on Saturday evening.

Sunil Chhetri scored for India in the 61st minute at Sri Kanti Rao Stadium in Bangalore.

Similarly, Naorem Mahesh Singh scored in the 69th minute of the game to give India a 2(0) advantage.

Nepal will play Pakistan in the last match after losing 3-1 to Kuwait in the opening encounter. Pakistan was also eliminated from the group stage following two straight losses. From this group, India and Kuwait advanced to the semi-finals.

India and Kuwait and Nepal and Pakistan will face each other in the final match.

India defeated Pakistan 4-0 in the opening encounter.

Nepal has only defeated India once in the SAFF Championship thus far. In 2013, they were defeated 2-1 at home in the championship group stage.

India, the eight-time champion, has traditionally crushed Nepal.

Nepal, who reached the final in the previous season, was trounced 3-0 by India in SAFF history.
