KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Health and Population has directed that no work relating to fetal gender identification be performed by health facilities.
Ekdev Khanal, the Ministry’s Deputy Secretary, has written to government, private, and community health groups instructing them not to perform any activity related to fetal gender identification.

It has been stated that gender disparity has appeared in the findings of the National Census, 2078, and gender cannot be designated as a method to stop discriminatory gender selection in the national plan to end discriminatory gender selection.
Identifying the gender of the fetus is deemed a punishable offence by law in sub-sections 7 and 8 of section 188 of the Civil Code, 2075, and section 17 of the Safe Maternity and Reproductive Health Rights Act, 2075, and health institutions are instructed not to identify the gender of the fetus.
