KATHMANDU: The advocates’ arguments on behalf of former home minister Bal Krishna Khand, who is also the leader of the Nepali Congress and was arrested in the bogus Bhutanese refugee case, have come to an end.

On behalf of Khand, the defendant in the case, his private lawyers Raman Shrestha, Gopal Krishna Ghimire, Khamba Bahadur Khati, Surendra Mahato, and Lalit Kumar Basnet argued.

During the debate, Advocate Shrestha contended that charges could be filed only after taking the statement against Khand in the matter of racketeering and organized crime.

He stated that the court should concentrate on the case in which the statement was obtained. He said that according to the statement given by Keshav Dulal, another accused in the said case, it appears that Rs 1.24 million was given to others without giving the mine. He urged that Khand be released without bond as he had not been proved guilty.

Likewise, advocate Surendra Mahato stated that the statement was made based on what was read in the news. He also said that the police issued a statement and refuted the allegation that Khand had chewed the paper. He claimed that searching the premises on the day of the arrest was illegal.

The case is being heard at Kathmandu’s district court.
