Bogus refugee case: police nabs absconding accused Laxmi Maharjan

KATHMANDU: The police have apprehended another accused in the bogus Bhutanese refugee scam case.

The accused, Lakxmi Maharjan, had been on the run since the investigation began on Friday.

Sitaram Rizal, SP of the Kathmandu Police Complex, stated that Maharjan was transported to the District Court in Kathmandu today following his arrest.

He stated that Maharjan, who was arrested while the other accused was giving his confession, was taken directly to court.

Maharjan’s statement will now be heard in court as well. With him, the total number of people detained in this investigation has risen to 17.

On Wednesday, the District Public Prosecutor’s Office in Kathmandu filed a lawsuit in court against fraudulent Bhutanese refugees.

A case has been filed against 33 people, including former Deputy Prime Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi and former Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand, 16 of whom have been detained and 17 of whom have not.

14 people are still on the run. The police have also opened an investigation into them.
