Afghan police destroy 160 hectare poppy farms, arrest 6 drug smugglers
The counter-narcotics police made the arrests and destroyed the poppy farms in operations conducted in Kabul, Wardak, Nangarhar, Baghlan, Herat, Bamyan, Ghor and Kapisa provinces over the past couple of weeks, the ministry said in a statement.
KABUL: Afghan police have destroyed more than 160 hectares of poppy farms and arrested six persons on their involvement in drug trafficking in recent weeks, the Ministry of Interior Affairs said Wednesday.
The counter-narcotics police made the arrests and destroyed the poppy farms in operations conducted in Kabul, Wardak, Nangarhar, Baghlan, Herat, Bamyan, Ghor and Kapisa provinces over the past couple of weeks, the ministry said in a statement.
Afghan authorities have intensified the crackdown on illicit drugs and people involved in the underground drug business. In recent moves, security personnel arrested six alleged drug smugglers in Kabul, Kandahar and Parwan provinces on Tuesday, police said.
In an April raid on illicit crops, Afghan police destroyed about 360 hectares of poppy farms in the northern Badakhshan province.
Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, supreme leader of Afghanistan’s Taliban-run caretaker administration, issued a decree in April last year that bans poppy cultivation, its processing into drugs and drug trafficking in the war-torn country.
