KATHMANDU: The chariot of Rato Machindranath, the god of rain and harvest, was pulled from Lagankhel to Jawalakhel today.

Preparations for pulling the chariot began around 4 p.m.

Every year, the chariot of Rato Machindranath, the deity of rain and seasons, is drawn around different spots in Lalitpur.

It is stated that while one can pray for anything, such as a good education, wealth, and peace, one should not beg for physical changes.

Rato Machindranath is one of the most exceptional religious rituals of the Kathmandu valley’s Newar community. It is known as Bunga Dyah Jatra in the Newari language.

Rato Machindranath Jatra follows the lunar calendar, hence the date varies from year to year.

It is celebrated at the start of the monsoon season to satisfy God Rato Machindranath.

It is one of the greatest religious events in the city and the longest chariot festival celebrated in the country.

Following the Bhoto Jatra, Rato Machhindranath will be pulled to Bungmati on a khat, while Meenath will be taken to Tangal in a chariot. Following that concludes this year’s Rath Yatra (chariot procession) of Rato Machindranath.

Astrologers on the 28th of Baisakh (May 11) had set today’s date to pull the chariot from Lagankhel to Jawalakhel .
