From beginner to expert: Dr. Kriti Mittal, a compassionate surgeon

KATHMANDU: Kriti Mittal decided to pursue a career in cardiac surgery in the United States after finding that no Nepali residents had been selected to specialize in general surgery in the country.
Finding a mentoring in the fast-paced field of medicine, where the stakes are high and the pressure is tremendous, is challenging, but it can make a difference for an aspiring surgeon.
Dr. Mittal is a well regarded and caring surgeon with a wealth of specialization, devotion, and an empathic nature who has made it her mission to support and guide newcomers to the field.
Dr. Mittal’s journey to becoming a heart care expert was distinguished by years of arduous research, extensive education, and many hours spent honing her skills.
After earning her MBBS at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan, she moved to Medanta (Gurgaon, India) to serve in the critical care unit. At the time, she was studying for the US medical licensing exam. After passing all of her tests, she began applying for research positions in the United States.
Finding mentors was a difficult process at that time in her journey, but she was fortunate to find a few people who assisted and counseled her as she pursued her objective.
She was invited to undertake research at the cardiac surgery and heart transplant division at the University of Texas at Houston. With the assistance of seasoned mentors, she completed the complicated aspects of heart operations and surgeries.
After accepting a one-year contract for a preliminary position in general surgery, a professor at the University of Texas recommended her for a second-year position based on her dedication and passion. Dr. Mittal has been granted permanent category status at the University of Connecticut, where she will complete her training.
She understands that heart surgery is more than simply a medical procedure for her patients and their families. Dr. Mittal’s energetic and empathic approach ensures that each patient receives the utmost attention, empathy, and support throughout their medical treatment. Dr. Mittal has received great recognition and appreciation for her contributions and skills in her community.
She will return to Nepal after completing her training, which is a huge achievement for the country as well. She is a ray of hope and inspiration in the field of heart surgery. Dr. Mittal is eager to serve as a mentor to aspiring cardiac surgeons, passing on her knowledge and inspiring the next generation of surgeons to succeed.
