KATHMANDU: Rekha Sharma, Minister of Communication and Information Technology, stated that the government believes that working journalists should be paid a fair salary.

She said this while accepting the memorandum submitted by the Minimum Wage Determination Committee on Sunday.

According to Minister Sharma, no one can access services or facilities in the current condition. She also brought up the subject of proportionate advertising in the policy and program, expressing her conviction that proportionate advertising will cover some parts of the minimum wage.

She believes that the one-by-one system and proportional advertising will eliminate advertising leakages. She stated that the administration is striving to have the striving Journalists Act implemented.

She said, ‘According to the current situation, no one can get services and facilities. Even if there is an increase in salaries in other areas, the minimum wage given to working journalists is difficult to survive, we will look into this. We have also talked about proportional advertising in the policy and program, and it is a matter of firmly implementing it. We have already talked about the one-door system. The leaks in the advertisement will reach that media house directly. It would be better if all the money goes to the media houses except for cutting the leakages in the middle. A special program can be made by the government through advertising and other means. The ministry is positive that working journalists should get a living wage. We will discuss it internally in the ministry. It does not mean that the Labor Journalists Act will not be implemented and even if the Act is a law, nothing will happen. There is a system of punishment. We have some problems. Acts and contrary regulations have also been made, we will think about the matter in a systematic way.’

Minister Sharma stated that the regulations were made and implemented in violation of the law, and that the government is working to regulate them. The determination committee demanded that the minimum pay be reviewed every two years, but due to the Corona virus, the minimum wage review has not been completed recently, and the committee has urged that a fresh wage review recommendation be implemented.

Eight demands have been made to the government, including that the human resources working in the communication establishment be provided with the facilities required by law, that the necessary budget and manpower be arranged for effective monitoring to uncover the truth, and that no government information be published/broadcast in any establishment that does not comply with the law.
