Biratnagar Eye Hospital & Noor Dubai Foundation collaborates, free eye test of 2,200 people in Sunsari

KATHMANDU: A two-day free eye examination and surgery camp was held in Dewangunj Rural Municipality as part of a joint endeavor between Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh Purwanchal Regional Eye Treatment Program Biratnagar Eye Hospital and Dewangunj Rural Municipality Sunsari.

During the eye camp, which was funded by the Noor Dubai Foundation, 242 persons were determined to have cataracts. Dr. Rakshya Pant, the hospital’s medical superintendent, stated that 154 patients received free cataract surgery, and the remaining patients will also receive free surgery.

According to Mohammad Rafiq, external program coordinator at Biratnagar Eye Hospital, 919 visually challenged people received free glasses during a camp hosted in Dewangunj Rural Municipality on Jestha 1 & 2 (May 15-16).

Cataract patients from the camp were taken to Biratnagar Eye Hospital for free surgery. After obtaining free eye treatment services at their homes, the patients, who had been forced to remain blind for a long time due to a lack of access to eye therapy and a lack of money, were happy and even praised the health workers.

According to Kumar Prithu, the hospital’s manager, the camp has benefitted the adjacent districts, including Sunsari, as well as Indian people from the border areas.

Biratnagar Eye Hospital provided services at the camp, led by ophthalmology specialists Dr. Sumit Mishra and Dr. Preety Agarwal.

The Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh Purwanchal Eye Health Program now operates two eye hospitals and 31 eye treatment centers.

In the year 2022, 121,3326 people had their eyes tested, and 131,846 people had surgery through hospitals, eye care institutes, and different external programs run under the previous eye health program. Similarly, from the organization’s inception to the year 2022, 12 million 243,0476 people have been inspected and 2 million 94 thousand 15 people have been served.

Similarly, 154 free eye camps were held in 2022, with 6,130 patients receiving free cataract surgery. Sudhir Thakur, the Purwanchal Eye Treatment Program’s principal administrator, believes that no person should be blind owing to a lack of access or funds, and that the Nepal government’s plan to avoid blindness that can be healed after treatment by 2030 should be successful.
