KATHMANDU: The police arrested Khand on Wednesday after the then-Home Secretary Teknarayan Pandey made a statement concerning the scheme to transport Nepalis to America as bogus Bhutanese refugees under the command of then-Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand.

Khand, on the other hand, was not eager to assist the police in this case.

On Wednesday, after learning that police had arrived at Khand’s apartment in Maijubahal, Chabahil, to arrest him, Khand bolted the door and went into hiding.

However, the police broke into his residence and arrested him.

After the police called him reaching inside the house, he said that he will come in a moment, he went inside and locked the door. The police did not stop calling. He took a stand not to go to the police. The police later confronted him by smashing down the door.

Even after that, when he refused to go, the police forcibly took him from the residence, put him in a car, and drove him to the district police station. Along with him, his personal assistant Narendra KC was detained.

Police were obliged to arrest Khand after Pandey, who was apprehended on Baisakh 20 (May 3), stated that he performed the act on Khand’s orders.

Also, the police are looking for CPN-UML Secretary and former Deputy Prime Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, who is involved in this case.

The police also raided his house in Satdobato. However, he could not be found.

With this, the number of alleged ones involved in the racket has reached 12, police said.

So far, 106 victims of the phony Bhutanese refugee scam have filed complaints with the police.

They filed accusations, claiming that intermediaries or fraudsters stole about Rs 230 million from them over a period of time, offering them false hope of being sent to the United States as Bhutanese refugees.
