By-election: Overall 60 percent votes cast, transport of ballot boxes to be completed by 11 pm

KATHMANDU: The voting for today’s House of Representatives by-election has concluded.

The by-elections for members of the House of Representatives in Bara Constituency No. 2, Chitwan Constituency No. 2, and Tanahun Constituency No. 1 were concluded peacefully and joyfully, according to the Election Commission.

Voting information is being entered into the Commission’s information system. According to preliminary data, around 60% of those eligible to vote have done so. According to the results, 64% of voters cast ballots in Bara District Constituency No. 2, 63% in Chitwan District Constituency No. 2, and 53% in Tanahun District Constituency No. 1.

In the Nov 20 House of Representatives election, 63.56 percent of votes were cast in Bara District Constituency No. 2, 67.63 percent in Chitwan District Constituency No. 2, and 54.03 percent in Tanahun District Constituency No. 1. In this election, there were 3 lakh 53 thousand 247 voters across all three constituencies.

According to information obtained from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office and the local administration, the ballot box for Bara Constituency No. 2 should be counted at Shiksha Training Centre, Kalaiya by 8 p.m., the ballot box for Chitwan Constituency No. 2 should be counted at Chamber of Commerce and Industry Hall, Bharatpur by 11 p.m., and the ballot box for Tanahun Constituency No. 1 should be counted. The necessary arrangements have been made to ensure that transportation arrives at the District Coordination Committee facilities in Damauli by 11 p.m.

Following the arrival of the ballot boxes to the counting location, the counting of votes will begin in accordance with the House of Representatives and State Assembly Member Election (Counting) Guideline, 2079, and the special instructions issued by the commission today regarding the counting of votes, with the agreement of the parties and candidates, and the results will be announced on the 12th of Baisakh (April 25).

Deputy Secretary of the Commission Kamal Gyawali informed that the Commission has directed the relevant Chief Electoral Officer to follow the procedure related to Election Disputes (Hearing and Resolution), 2076 in order to avoid any dispute over the election’s freedom and fairness, and if such a situation arises.
