KATHMANDU: Eid al-Fitr, the great festival of Islam, is being celebrated today. For this feast, Muslims fasted for a month. This is known as ‘Roja’.
During the month-long Ramadan festival, Muslims fast during the day. It is common for Muslims to eat light meal at ‘Sehri’ about 3:20 a.m. in the morning and break their fast by eating sweet food at ‘Iftar’ after sunset.
According to the Urdu calendar, Ramadan is the ninth month of Hijri year 1444. It is thought that if the greatest book of Muslims, the Qur’an, is revealed during Ramadan, Allah’s appreciation will be received in this month.
The month of Ramadan is particularly important and holy for Muslims because it completes all of the five main pillars of Muslims except Hajj.
Today, Muslims congregate in ‘Idgah’ or ‘Masjid’ to worship collectively to commemorate Eid-al-Fitr.
